Changes to smoking cessation and vaping starting from Jan 2024

TL;DR

  • Vapes cannot be easily accessed from 1st Jan, with import restriction in play

  • Patients need a script to access vapes

  • Smoking cessation codes are now no long available for us to claim to help patients with smoking cessation

In the intricate dance of healthcare, 2024 has unveiled a series of reforms that are reshaping our roles as medical professionals. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has ushered in changes to vaping regulations, coinciding with a notable shift in the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS).

In a notable departure from convention, doctors find themselves at the forefront of vaping regulations. The TGA's emphasis on prescriptions for smoking cessation and nicotine dependence management reflects a nuanced approach, recognising the need for medical guidance in this evolving landscape.

As the first stage of 2024 unfolds, the TGA introduces stricter import controls on vapes, with a focus on protecting Australians, particularly the younger demographic, from potential vaping-associated harms. While this aligns with the broader goal of public health, it does introduce an additional layer of complexity to the process of obtaining vaping devices.

January 1, 2024, marks a significant date with the complete ban on importing disposable vapes. This change, even with a prescription, disrupts the convenience previously associated with online purchases or convenience stores. The adjustment period may present challenges for both healthcare providers and patients, prompting a reconsideration of smoking cessation strategies.

Adding a layer of complexity to the narrative, the MBS has also undergone changes. Smoking cessation codes, once a staple in our repertoire, have been removed as of January 1, 2024. This reduction in access to specific codes poses challenges for GPs and other medical professionals seeking to provide comprehensive support for patients on their journey to quit smoking.
